Hello all, newbie here. Don't know much about outboards but slowly learning. I recently bought a boat with a 1987 force 85 hp. Runs great but problem with the trim and tilt. After raising the motor, the motor will slowly drop. It takes about 5 minutes to fully lower. I read some posts on the web that it could be low fluid or problem with the "pilot check valve" ? I don't have a manual so not sure where the pilot check valve is, or is there another name for this part? And
does it take hydraulic fluid? Any suggestions, help would be great!!!!

Thanks ------scott

With a force I suggest you purchase the repair manual, you will need it.

Power steering fluid even 20weight oil in a pinch. If the unit leaks all the way down then you will probably need to replace the hyd pump. There was a post a few days ago with a link to a place that sells them.
Sometimes on E-bay some people will list the pump and the whole unit.
If you can't find the link I might be able to find a complete outfit.PM me,Jerry

Nope, that's only the motor. You might need the valve body. But.....that might not cure it. From what I understand, leak down is inherent on most Force trim systems. Mine leaked down so I bought a new valve body, already had a new trim motor, but it still leaks down. There are no signs of an external fluid leak, so you and I may be in the same boat, pardon the pun. I have heard that the tilt or trim may leak internally if the seals are bad but the first thing to look at is will it leak all the way down or just down to the lower cylinder?

Sorry, stopped too soon. If it leaks all the way then the valve body is a good place to start. If it only goes down to the lower cylinder and stops there then your upper has the problem (like mine).

Re: Tilt and trim problems

ok, not a good start on my boat that I purchased only 2 weeks,,tilt and trim problems, no spark to 2nd cylinder. Thank God I only paid 800.00 for the boat and motor!!! I guess you get what you pay for. Anyway I thought my trim was staying, but now that is dropping also. Need to fix my spark problem 1st:mad:
