tilt and trim

hi, just fitted a brand new tilt and trim motor to my 1990 searay 160, which is fitted with a 3.0l mercriuser and a alpha one leg, leg goes up and down ok, at first, but then motor gets hot and leg only goes down, but tap (recently new) solenoid (which also gets warm after a few minutes) and leg goes up and down fine, but not up again, untill the solenoid is again rocked and tapped, live supplyis direct from battery (its an old boat) any ideas, regards.
