Re: tilt cylinder/ outboard motor help
Phil, The end of the trim cylinder unscrews. You will need to fabricate a spanner to loosen it. I made the spanner out of two six inch pieces of angle iron, which I bolted together at one end and put screws thru the other end. These screws just fit the the holes on the end cap. The thread is standard right handed.
The oring that seals the tilt cylinder rod is made of special rubber. Standard orings wear out very fast. You can get one from a MerCruiser dealer, but you need to ask for the lower driveshaft O-ring from a Alpha 1 Gen I outdrive. There about $2 ea.
You motor problem could be a fuel pump weakness or an electrical issue. If you hand pump the primer bulb, and the problem disappears, rebuild the fuel pump(s). if the problem stays, you may have heat-related ignition issues. Find a good ADI troubleshooting guide (Dolphin marine Services has a website with one)
