I just bought the boat and it?s in great condition, but the upper fitting on the Tilt Cylinder was fractured.

It?s a collar/strap with a fitting in it that compresses against the hole at the top of the cylinder.

I ordered the new part and installed it. When tightening the fitting on the new part the strap broke. I took it off and realized that the fitting is slightly longer than the old one. Consequently when I tightened it, the strap tore/broke.

I ordered another, but before I put this one on I want to be sure I understand how this is supposed to work. It seems the simplest solution is not to tighten it so much. However, the part is $40 and I don?t want to blow more money only to realize I am doing something completely wrong.

The part I don?t get is how this thing is supposed to hold pressure. All it does is make contact with the upper hole. Is it simply meant to release the pressure and allow the fluid to flow back to the reservoir? Even if that?s the case, with the weight of the engine pushing the cylinder back to home position, it would still generate a bit of pressure. Again, if I understood this part better it would be helpful.

While waiting for the second part to arrive, I decided to try and Gerry-Rig a replacement using a brake bleeder fitting and a pipe strap. It fit perfectly, but when I tested it, it blew out anyway. I can imagine 20 reasons why this didn?t work, but it?s just more reason why I need understand HOW it supposed to work.

If anyone can shed light on this issue I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

M

The cylinder wall is too thin to machine in a threaded hole for a compression fitting like those on the pump and the bottom of the cylinder. Additionally, the hole must be at the very top of the inside of the cylinder. So, that is why an adapter hydraulic fitting was used.

The hole in the cylinder is tapered as is the end of the pressure adapter fitting. The strap locates the fitting and since the fitting is threaded, you can exert tremendous pressure on the fitting, hole, and strap. Thus, the tapered hole and adapter will seal relatively easily

The proper way to install it is to snug it and then just a little more. THEN, when you connect the hydraulic line, Hold the adapter fitting with a wrench to keep it from turning since the hydraulic compression fitting must be tighter than the adapter contacting the cylinder.

If it leaks, loosen the compression fitting and snug the adapter a little more. Not too much--as you learned, it is easy to break the strap.

I wanted to let you all know that it took a while to get the 2nd Band Assembly for the Tilt Cylinder. It arrived last weekend, we installed it successfully (and properly without breaking it :) ) and it's working great.

Frank's explanation was extremely helpful. It helped to understand how to do the install, but also how the cylinder is constructed to understand better what we were doing.

Thanks go again to Frank for his help.

Frank,

I need the very part he's talking about - the adapter. Do I have to order the entire assembly or can I find the adapter somehwere?

Big thanks

RRitt,

That adapter worked like a champ! Thanks a ton! At first it still leaked, but I gave it another half a turn when I had the whole assembly off when I changed out the motor. That did it.

FrankA, Thanks so much for your help too. You were my next option. : )

You guys are the best!!
