Hello All.
My tilt cylinder just failed on my 1989 85 hp. The fitting where the stainless line connects to the side let go. Is is possible to have a new fitting welded on? Anyone have an extra tilt cylinder laying around?

Thanks

Re: Tilt Cylinder ???

you can buy new band collars from a dealer for about $35.

Thanks for the replies. A $35 collar sounds like better news than I was expecting.

it wasn't the cylinder that i stripped out the threads on but the pump itself. i found some brass fittings that had the same brakeline type threads on the female side and 1/8 in pipe thread on the other...tapped out the bad threads with 1/8 in pipe tap..think the fittings was less than a doller and the tap was around $8. be sure to get a bottem tap. i done all four lines and there holding good.

flush, flush, and flush some more. there are crevices that can not be gotten to without ruining the valve body. the metal flakes generated from rethreading your ports will fall right into them. flush, flush, and then flush some more. maybe even run the pump with a drill in a bucket of parts cleaning solution or something. You don't want to take valve body apart because then it may never work right again. But flush, flush, and then flush some more.

ya.. i forgot to mention that.. i did have mine apart when i done mine and could clean it out with brake cleaner and air. another thing i done was instead of useing pipe tape or sealer on pipe threads, i used JBweld :D .

There is a lot of pressure so some type of sealing aid should be used. JBweld aluminum would be a good choice. It would keep the pipe threads from being accidentally loosened while attaching brake tubes. The downside with JB weld is that if you ever try to remove the brass then it might twist off in the hole. A good pipe joint compound that hardens slightly might be a happy compromise between strength and permanence.
