1996 Yamaha C85 outboard.
The tilt quit working the other day. The background is that the tilt motor died about a year ago, and I had a local shop replace it since I simply couldn't get at it. To get it on the trailer, I used the manual release. The tilt fluid has been a little milky for a while, I knew it had a small leak. Normally, the trim pistons sit slightly above the water line, so I wasn't sure where it was leaking in. It never leaked any fluid out, ever. Occasionally, however, I had to add fluid. Usually about once per month or so, so I am not sure where it was going. Boat is kept in [brackish] water in the canal behind my house in Fort Lauderdale.
When it was low on fluid, the motor would run with kind of a high pitched sound, and once fluid was added it would move the motor up and down fine. It did that the other day, so I added some fluid. Problem: There was plenty of fluid, as a small amount leaked out when I removed the plug...
I know the battery is 100% charged since I have a battery tender mounted.
OK. I figure something must be plugged up, perhaps a pressure relief valve is stuck open or something like that. I went to lower the unit manually....but discovered that the manual release is apparently stuck! Cannot move it in either direction, it is a reverse thread, there is an arrow embossed into the flange telling which way to turn. If I cannot lower the motor, I cannot get it to a shop to have it fixed....
Any ideas?
Thanx in advance!
