I have a 1990 Bayliner Capri and there is a problem with the tilt. It wont stay up so when i transport my boat I have to use a bar to keep engine from completely falling. The tilt slowly drops but when moving in the water it will drop real fast. When I was getting a tune up at mechanic last year, all he told me was that it was expensive to fix, but never told me any details other than that. The engine is a 120HP Force. I dont know much about boat mechanics but is there anything I can do that does not require spending lots of money? It is not a big issue to me but I would like to fix it if there is something I can do.

the trim should drop more slowly than the tilt.

try lifting the engine up, blocking it in place, and plugging the two front tubes (back of trim and bottom of tilt). Your engine should have zero drift down with these two tubes capped off.

If it drifts down with these tubes plugged then your rams need rebuilding. That's an afternoon of work and $20 worth of parts.

If it does not drift down then it is the pump valve body that needs rebuilding or replacing. That's $100-$250. Not a good DIY project. Check iboats, ebay, and amazon.
