I have been searching the forums for a few days now and cannot find the answer for my question. I may not be searching correct words if so i am sorry for the repeat question.

On my 1985 85 force motor where would the tilt lock be located at? There is a black lever at the very bottom of the engine on the outside of the entire assembly and it is connected to a rod that turns with it, which runs to the back. I thought that was it however i have tried to use it to lock the engine in the down position and nothing happened. I have also tried to use it while the engine was in the half up position on the transom saver, didnt work either. Am i using this wrong? Or is that even the tilt lock mechanism? If not what should i be looking for? I saw the metal brace on ebay that is suppose to slide in and the motor lower down on to, but i was told by a gentleman at bass pro there may even be a peice already in there like i described.

Thanks for any advice and help out there. I am trying to have a idea of what to do if i have to manual raise the motor again. It fell off the saver the last time and hit the road. We couldnt raise it high enough to get the saver in the proper posistion so it slipped off. Very bad ending to a very bad day.

Re: Tilt lock

some engines don't have a tilt lock. I am thinking a 1985 85Hp is one of the engines that only had a trailering bar. if you do have one it is on the inside upper edge of transom bracket as you stand behind the boat. Some engines had them on both sides and some only on one.

Re: Tilt lock

The small black lever under the motor that you talked about is for engaging the reverse lock clamp. If the boat you have once had a tilt/trim unit on it then it was probably removed. If it were there and functioning then when you engaged it the engine would be locked in the down position. The tilt lock can only be used with the engine fully raised and is usually on the left side of the transom bracket if you are facing the boat from the back. I have a 1985 85hp as a parts motor and just checked and it does not have tilt lock..

Re: Tilt lock

Please post pics or a link showing what you are referring to. Do you use bungee cords, tie-downs, booms, etc motor to trailer to eliminate bouncing? I hate to hear or see a motor fall even at low speeds. jow

Re: Tilt lock

I usually use a metal transom saver attached to the trailor. It however was impossible to get the motor up high enough for it to be properly installed the last time my tilt motor went out. So it slid down the lu on the way home and while i was pulling into the parking lot it allowed the engine to drop onto the skeg. Which was a blessing in a way it got rid of the little nick that was in it. And smoothed out the skeg for me. I do put a bungee around the back of the lu and to the ts to hold it in place however it was not able to hold the ts in place during the final bump.i was just hoping i was lucky enough to have a tilt lock i was thinking i wasnt that lucky.
