What kind of sealant would be best suited for making a gasket for my tilt mechanism clutch housing? Its on the port side of the stern, 4 screws and one 1 fill screw. Can I get away with permatex? If so which color is best? The grey used for pumps/thermostats?

I dont know if that is the clutch housing but I know it is part of the tilt mechanism... its not the motor with the blue green wires, it is outside the boat on the portside stern.

Re: Tilt Mech sealant question

2 weeks ago when I took the boat out on its maiden voyage it overheated and we towed back to the ramp. The trim/tilt wouldnt work when we got the ramp. The three big bolts were frozen solid, actually broke a socket trying to loosen them. Anyways, one guy at the ramp took apart the clutch housing in order to get the sterndrive up. He took a snap ring off and then there were a series of alternating toothed plates that slid over a shaft.

I believe its the clutch housing.... the book says to use 4cyc. motor oil to fill it, teflon based pipe sealant, and OMC gasket sealing compound. Im trying to figure out which permatex product is a good alternative to the OMC gasket sealing compound.

So the super 300 by permatex is "saltwater proof?" It sounds like really mean stuff

I certainly understand forgetting to mention what you are working on when you first post a question - it's an easy thing to overlook. ;)

But when you are asked several times....

The information needed from you in order for anyone to help you is listed in the link Don provided.
