Tilt motor dead? Troubleshooting.

I have an old 1977 johnson 115 with the original tilt/trim unit. When I press the tilt up button on the throttle lever, the wiring box clicks. When I press the down button, I get nothing. In either case, the tilt motor will not operate. Is this a burnt motor or a solenoid? I have yet to check with a volt meter because I don't have one. Thanks for any help.

There should be two relays (about $15 each) on the port side of motor under plastic cover where it is clicking. Start there with a test light. You could also jump tilt motor to see if it works. Reversing the +&-wires makes the tilt go the opposite direction. If you have to change the tilt motor do not worry. It is an easy job and not that much money for parts.

Only one relay on this system Ed. And that one is used for up since the motor draws more current going up. Looks like a starter solenoid.

bkraus....find the little TNT "black box" and open it up. You should find a four wire connector in there....may be outside....but it will be coming from the TNT motor.

There will be four wires....green (down), blue (up), black (ground) and a smaller black wire which is the signal lead to the trim gauge.

Let's see if the motor works. Rig a jumper to the connector from the motor side connector....large black lead to battery negative terminal. Now with another jumper, touch the blue wire terminal in the connector. If the motor is good, the engine should tilt up. Touch the green terminal, the engine should go down.

If all is good there, start checking your connections. Make sure they are clean and making good contact. Usually, dirty contacts are the problem.

Keep us posted.
