Hello All,
If anyone has any insight on the following, I would appreciate it. I had to pull the tilt motor out of my 79 OMC i/o due to it being rendered useless by some saltwater in the bilge. I bought a rebuilt motor and installed it. Motor sounded great, drive went down- no problem, drive went back up -no problem. A week later, I had to put the drive down. Motor sounded fine, drive went down - no problem. I installed a new starter. Starter works fine. Now my tilt motor is dead again! Solenoids are fine, wires and connections are fine, motor is just completely dead again. I considered buying a brand new one and giving that a try but I don't want to go through the torture of pulling and replacing the motor if I am just going to kill another one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a dumb question. Have you checked the voltage at the connector? Could you have a hanging brush? Those motors are pretty simple and straight forward. It's hard to believe it is bad. If it turns out to be so, maybe your local starter repair shop can check it. I'm still using my original motor. I'ts now 28 y/o. I've taken it out and cleaned the comutator and maybe ? installed new brushes. I also (shhhh) drilled a hole in the bottom side to allow condesation out.

Scooby: I had the EXACT same thing happen. I replaced the trim motor and the following day replaced the starter motor, only to find the trim motor no longer worked. For me, the problem was with the ground wire. The ground wire from the battery to the engine block looked tight, but actually was loose. On my engine, that ground bolt is not easily accessible so I relocated it and added a ground bus. However, I digress, please check your ground wire ... especially since you just replaced the starter.

ScoobyDoo
I assume you also checked the tilt clutch to make sure no water in it and that it is full of motor oil. If you have water in the clutch and it is below freezing motor will not turn it. I would pull the motor back off and see if it runs. Check the voltage acrossed the from wire to wire. If your getting +12 volts one way and minus -12 the other way and the motor does not turn then the brushes are hung up or the comutator is bad or you have a open winding.

My unit is a 1980 and never had a problem with the motor. The clutch seal have failed and it got water inside. Also the outdrive pivot pins froze up to the point motor would not lift. I always greased the fittings at least once a year. I took pivot cap off and cleaned old grease out and put new grease in and it is like new. One tap and it is all the way down. Count to 3 and it is all the way up.

Nothin like the ole stringer tilt. You can approach a low visibility obstacle, on plane, kill the motor, raise the outdrive and just coast over the top of it. Eat your hearts out Merc drivers. :D
