On an OMC v6 Stringer type(1984) motor is the only way to take out that tilt motor to take the sterndrive off? Thanks in advance.

no, the tilt motor is inside the boat. Lower port side down in the worst part of the bilge.
Sometimes removing the transom boot helps for access from outside, but on some boats it's easy to get inside..

Depends on how young and flexible you are, and your collection of long 1/4" drive extensions with swivels and such.

Will try it without taking sterndrive off if needed. Thanks. Also is the tilt and trim totally seperate, I think so. If the trim is leaking hydraulic fluid from the mounts would the trim actually go back up on its own?

trim is hydraulic. Tilt is completely electric/mechanical.
I'm not sure what you are asking about "going up"...usually the engine settles when the seals leak on the rams.

When can and cant you use trim and/or tilt on those motors? I have heard so many things and these are the only two things with this boat that don't seem to work right or consistently. I am new at this tilt trim and I/O sterndrives. Thanks for the help.

If you go to the top of this page stickys adults only, and get yourself a manual you can better undestand your (tilt) & (trim) system on that OMC !

the 3.8 selectrim is not a problem at all... it is an awesome little system - super simple. You can trim anytime anywhere...in or out of water especially handy to access oil filter etc. You just need to throw seals in your rams.... a very simple job.

The tilt is a known issue on these drives. search the forums will reveal many tips and tricks.
The tilt MUST be full down anytime the engine is started on any OMC drive produced from 1964 to 1985.
