After reading some posts on trim motors it seems like you have to pay around $200 to get a good one torque wise. No one lists the torque on their motors. So what is the difference between the $75 motor and the $200 motor and how do you tell. They all look the same for the specific application. 1972 sterndrive electric shift. 225hp. Thanks, Rich

Trim or tilt? If it's the tilt motor on a '72, there should only be one of those and a replacement should be about $200 - $250. I'd look at having the one ya' got rebuilt if possible.

I'll eco Southkogs --Try rebuild 1st.
Seldom is the motor windings or stator shorted - Most often it is: less than 12 VDC to supply, loose wires + or - , dirty or rusted brush holder. worn brushes, broken brush springs. I'm sure a rebuild kit is made for it and even if not a similar in kind kit can be used by just grinding the replacement brush to fit in the slide holders. Also, you can even find the small brush springs at most hardware stores or just take a ball point pen apart and use that spring if all else fails. In reality its very easy to the work yourself. However, if u are unsure , just take it to your local "Auto Starter Repair shop. If you decide to give it a try and need help, just PM me. A new one for my Cobra was $200- $275--guess what, for about 30 bucks, a miller lite or 2 and it is working great. No way was I going to pay that without at least trying to fix. Good luck!

Mine was in pretty rough shape and the guy at the shop I use here in Nashville didn't blink at it. Don't know what he said about me after I left, but standing there it didn't seem crazy to him :)

I'd go for it.

The spark in itself Does not mean you have a short . If can PM a photo of motor I can walk you through it. Or like I said before, just pull the motor an take to a (Auto) starter or generator place and see what they say. Good luck
