Hi , I have a 1975 75 hp. Chrysler o.b. where the tilt position pin goes through the bracket holes there is a small spring loaded metal plate. What is this ( I read something about reverse thrust?) and should the pin be in front of (motor side), or behind (boat side) ?

there are a bunch of small metal brackets that fit your description. It could be tilt lock, tilt limit, tilt gauge, reverse lock, trim thrust plate ... or even a non-tilt item. Maybe a picture would help.

not sure if this plate needs to be positioned with the pin or what it is for? if it is behind the pin I would need to remove the pin before lifting motor..is this correct?

i think i saw one of those on a tilt-only boat a couple years ago. It locked the engine into position - although I can't remember if it locked into up or down. I think there was a rod attached to it that flipped the plate up and down. Have you tried flipping through the on-line parts diagrams?

That plate is the engine tilt locking plate and is controled by a lever on the front of the engine under the engine mount support tube.

This is used to lock the engine down on the tilt pin.

And, if it has dropped that far, then the actuating rod has been removed or the plastic cam on the lever and rod under the engine tilt bolt has broken.

That plate is usually held slightly above the tilt pin (black handle) until you turn the lever below the steering snout.

If you are good, you can push the plate up while you lower the engine onto the tilt pin. Good way to pinch your fingers though.

You guys are awsome!! My thoughts on this plate were correct. Because I could lock it but not unlock it and I had to push the plate up while lowering the engine like Frank said it had me second guessing myself. God speed and blessings to those who share their wealth of knowledge may they always find a hand when they are in need........ Thanks!
