Tilt problem older OMC sterndrive

I have an older OMC sterndrive, mid 1970s the one with the boot on the transom. The problem is the drive unit will not tilt up without just a little help. The motor engages, the drive unit moves approximately 3-4 inches then stops. Have tried replacing the motor, the shaft and worm gear, the clutch pack and shaft, the outer cap and the inner bushing. The drive unit only moves that little bit, then stops moving. if you put your hand under the drive and give it just a little help, it tilts. Any suggetions?

Hi Iceman,<br /> Those old tilt systems could cause a man to say a few 4 letter words. What type of oil are you using in the clutch-pack? I believe those old units used 30W have someone work the tilt switch while you help it up and down a few times to work the oil in, this might help.

the clutch pack uses 30 wt oil and the manual said to soak it in the oil for I think 10 minutes before installing the pack. with all new parts, it should lift a building

I have a serries 400 and had the same problem. I worked on the tilt unit also with out much help. Worked just like yours does. I fixed it by pulling the caps off of the pivot point for the outdrive, cleaning out all the old grease putting in new greese. In my case even though I greesed the pivots often the grease really only got to the back side. After I cleaned out the old grease, salt ect. it raises all the way in a count of three. Before I would hit the tilt 20 times to get it all the way up or have some one lift.

Thanks for the info, I will try a different oil and clean the old grese and re-lube it,
