I have a 1981 75johnson. Recently I had it sitting for a couple of months, and when I pulled it out the tilt didn't work I believe the tilt motor is seized or needs to be cleaned but it looks like you have to remove the entire tilt to get to the screws to open the tilt motor? has anyone done this and could you walk me through getting it off.

Thanx

Re: Tilt repair

Before going into a lot of work....... trace the wires back from the PTT electric motor to its connector, then unplug it. Now, run jumper wires directly from the battery to the electric motor wires. If the electric motor runs, then obviously it's okay.

Should the electric motor be okay, check for loose connections or tight but dirty or corroded connections....... all of the wiring associated with the PTT system.

If the electric motor is faulty, remove the top pin from the center tilt cylinder, the three bolts on each side that retain the PTT assembly, then tilt the unit backwards to remove it from the transom brackets.

Should you have the transom brackets that do not allow the unit to be removed in the above fashion, it will be necessary to remove/slide to port the port (left) transom bracket. Should this be the case..... be absolutely sure to have the engine supported so that it cannot drop or slide sideways!
