Tilt slowly lowers

I have a 40 horse mercury motor with tilt on it and when it is in the up position it slowly lowers. What could be the problem.<br />Thanks

It could be as simple as an opened manual release valve,or as complicated as having to replace the entire tilt unit.It would be nice to know a little bit more about what you have.40 horse mercs have smiled in many different faces over the years.

The serial # is OG025573 and the outboard model is 1-040412PT it is a 1994 mercury 40 horse that came with the tracker boat of the same year. Hoping it is just a seal, could it be low fluid level.<br />Thanks.
