Tilt Switch?

Today I got into my 96 Chaparral 1935SS for the first time since winter began. Besides needing to charge the battery, it appears my tilt switch for the engine (trim switch?) is broken. The motor will go down when I press the down switch, but fails to come up with the up switch. However if I press the trailer switch the motor comes up. So, I assume I have a bad switch (if you can think of something else please chime in). The switch is integrated into the throttle, and is a toggle type. Does anyone know where I can find this switch? Or where to start looking?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: Tilt Switch?

Mercruiser hae? The trim limit switch is the bad guy. Its located on the port side of the gimball house.
When pushing the tilt (trailer) button it by-passes this trim limitswitch and if the outdrive moves up the solenoid is ok, fix or replace this limit switch.

Ayuh,... Like Frank says, it's probably Not the switch on the controller, but the limit switch on the drive...
You can by-pass it just inside the transom, where the wiring comes together...

Re: Tilt Switch?

Make sure the drive is far enough down to tilt back up. On mine there is a safety switch so you cannot tilt too high while underway. The trailer switch bypasses the safety switch and brings it all the way up. If you do need a new switch it will depend on what control you have but most likely it will be replaceable.
On mine I had a problem where the cap with he up/down arrows are that you actually press your thumb on, popped off of the actual switch so instead of actuating the switch, the cap would rock on the switch and it seemed like the switch was bad. Try to pop the cap off and see if the actual switch is working. I used a little epoxy on mine and it's fine again.

Re: Tilt Switch?

hey i have the same problem.. i was working on my bellows today and seen the wires were frayed and not touching anymore .. so anyways they broke right at the transom where they go inside the boat so i was wondering howto take off that little gasket plate held on by 2 bolts. i removed the lower one but upper one is difficult 2 get my wrenches or socket on it... do i even need to have trim tabs? lol can i just leave wires cut on the outisde and cut them off on the inside? or also... its mercruiser drive 1987.. but i seen on a site teh sierra ones i found are about $20 cheaper... is there a difference? any sites anyone knows that are cheap?
