Tilt/Trim dropping.

Hi
Have a 1986 150 XR2 A904458.
The tilt allows the motor to slowly drop when parked. The hydraulics are obviously not holding up.
Any ideas.
Thanks.
Jim.

Re: Tilt/Trim dropping.

There is a small valve in the piston of the one of the trim rams (I can't remember if it's the port or starboard), if that gets a bit of dirt in it the engine will drop slowly. Also any 'o' rings on any of the pistons could be passing, or as the previous poster said, the manual valve could be slightly loose, or one of its 'o' rings is leaking.

Thanks to all for the valuable information. The motor is of the boat now and I will do the checks nonce I have it in the upright position again. I will let you all know what transpires.
Many Thanks.

Re: Tilt/Trim dropping.

Mine was doing that same thing shortly before blowing the top seals out of the tilt piston. I never saw any leaking of fluid, until right before they blew completely. That's when I saw some fluid, then I saw the old seals and o-rings completely dislodged from the piston housing. It was a pain to remove all that stuff and replace the rings and seals, but I did it, and now have the satisfaction of knowing just what all is in there, and I feel pretty good about being able to do it myself. Now if I can just get my "UP" problem fixed!

Re: Tilt/Trim dropping.

I have a 2000 year 75hp Mercury and it has the above problem only when actually underway. It goes up and down ok when stationary and up and down when underway but will not 'hold' in the up position while moving along. Any suggestions very welcome.
