I have a new 2011 Mercruser 140 still in breakin mode. When i trim the boat the gage is barely off the bottom of the gage. I would think it should be close to the center of the gage. I don't realy use the gage to determine the correct trim but since it is a new boat i want it to be correct. Any help is appreciated.

The gauge shows the position of the outdrive, relative to its full up and full down position. It is not 'trim' in the operating sense. For that you will need a mechanical indicator that shows more precisely the position of the outdrive in the 'trim' range.

WOW quick Replies I did not even get a change to get another cup of coffee before the replies came in.

Thanks i am picky about things working correctly. I just have to adjust my thinking on this one.

Re: Tilt Trim Gage Reading

I must say I've never encountered a trim gauge that produces usable readings - outboard or I/O. I'm like you topcat - I obsess about stuff working properly and the wonky readings I was getting on the Yamaha's trim gauge were driving me nuts on my otherwise "perfect" boat.

On one visit to the dealer soon after I bought it they told me the tab that moves against the sensor "breaks all the time" on these motors. I had a new one installed and it lasted all of half a season before going Tango Uniform again.

So, I just grit my teeth and try to ignore it. Trim by feel is the way to go anyway, as you have...er...indicated. Pun intended!:D

Do you have Smartcraft gauges? If so, they might need to be reset to factory specs by the dealer's tech.

Mercury's newest gauges are electronic and might require recalibration.

You would have received a Smartcraft handbook with delivery of boat/engine.
