Mercruiser recommends 10W30 motor oil.
Check in your owners manual or service manual, it's in both.

This is from the owners manual.

I have a 3.0L mercruiser 1997 and the manual said to use a 30 weight oil. The change the oil last season and replace it with the 30 weight oil.

I have an OMC Cobra 3.0 but the tilt/trim motor looks as if it has ATF in it(red as cherry koolaid). Should I drain and change it? If so, what does it call for and how how to completly drain it?

OMC and Mercruiser are different.
It depends on what pump you have. They used different pumps for different years.
