Tilt Trim Motor

Ok here goes. I have a 382SPMRCOM OMC. Stringer 800 series outdrive. Neither of the tilt trims (outdrive or engine drive) work. I have a bad tilt motor. Without taking off the intermediate housing, is there anyway you can remove this motor? I can get to the upper bolt but not the lower bolt.

Also, would it be possible to forget about the outdrive trim by installing a new tilt trim motor just to work the engine trims?

I sure don't want to take off the intermediate housing.

Thanks

Re: Tilt Trim Motor

You might be best served to yank the seats and engine cover to get to the tilt motor, but you should be able to get to it from inside the boat. I have the inline 6 and can get back in there, but it's a rib buster for sure. On some units it has been suggested that you can pull it off just by undoing the transom boot - haven't tried that myself.

Don't try to trim with the tilt system. It'll kill your ball gear. That system is designed to run full down and trim from the front end. I'm currently running without trim for that reason - but I don't run WOT very much right now.

He's right...don't run it with the tilt in any position other than down. Like he mentions, I think you can get access with the boot removed.

Have you checked the fuses? Next would be to check the solenoids. There are 4...one for tilt up and one for tilt down...one for trim up and one for trim down. You could jump the solenoid and see if the motor for the trim or the motor for the tilt kicks in.

Re: Tilt Trim Motor

Thanks for the info. The previous owner had a mechanic cut all sorts of electrical wires to disengage both the tilt/trim and select trim systems. I decided and ya'll comfirmed to just leave the tilt/trim in the down poistion. However, I would like to try and fix the select trim system. I can't seam to find an electrical diagram showing this select trim system. Any help would be appreciated.
I have tried jumping the solenoids, but with out any luck. Took one off completely, tested it, and it worked, so I'll progress to the other three doing the same. I assume since several wires have been cut that there isn't power to the solenoids.
I do get the knock sound from the solenoids when I try the trim switch.
