Tilt/trim noise

I have an early eighties Johnson 70. The tilt/trim is very loud and makes clicking noises when putting the motor up and down. I think it is the hydraulic ram making the noise. I suspect it needs some kind of repair, but it has been doing this for a month and it still seems to work fine other than being loud. It doesn't leak fluid or bleed down. I greased all the zerk fittings and verified that the hydraulic fluid level is correct .

I suspect I need to remove the motor to do anything with the tilt unit. I'm not really sure what is wrong, but I would like to correct it before it breaks when I need it. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

That could be the tilt tube.

Also, grease the rams and see if there is a difference. Use marine bearing grease or Triple Guard Grease.

It is a good practice to park the motor in the running position, not tilted.

If you do store it tilted, use the trail locks and withdraw the rams completely.

The clicking noise is simply the solenoids activating. No problems there.

Grease the rods and follow Ezeke's advice. I would not worry about it. Is this motor new to you or was it much quieter in the past and has currently began getting louder?

You could also try draining the hydraulic fluid, refilling then bleeding.

It is a new thing. Its more of a creaking/clicking type noise. I'm going to grease the rams, and change the fluid. I will also try to verify where it is coming from.
