1988 Stingray SVB176. Mercruiser Alpha 1. 3.0l 4 cylinder engine.

I have been searching the forums and cannot seem to find a straight answer as to what oil to use in the tilt/trim system. Mine was off and not working when I bought the boat and I am ready to install and fill/test. Seems like the general consensus is 10W40 motor oil?

Any tips on how to fill/bleed etc would be appreciated also.

Thank you all,

Austin.

Think the pump/motor is oildyne. It is the square one with three leads.

ANY Non-Detergent oil 30wt fine. Any Hydraulic oil ok too. Don't use reg motor oil...might foam and cavitate. And just fill it up and run it...then top off

Re: Tilt/Trim oil (oildyne pump, I think)

Thanks for the information, picked up two quarts of shell 30ND from Advance last night and tried it out. everything looks like it is working great, this has not been in the water since '97 so I am really pleased (and lucky I guess). Had to dump the fluid after running up/down for 7-8 times as it turned brown!
Will probably change again after I get the boat in the water hopefully very soon.

Thanks for your help & information.

Austin.

Are you referring to the fill cap on the reservoir? It must have been lost at some point as it has a plastic cap which drops into the fill opening then a tamperproof cap like that on a container of antifreeze but no vent at all.

Do you think I need to drill a small hole in the cap to vent the bowl?

I do believe that brown color is rust, so flush it and run it until its clear. Seals do NOT like rust particles. (and put a charger on the battery!)

Didn't know they sold it. New to boating and new to boats/mercruisers etc etc. But enjoying learning!

I am new to boating and would like to know how do you change the oil in the tilt and trim reservoir in the boat and also flush out the old oil from the pipe / system. I looked for sites that would teach me but cannot find one. Was wondering if you all can help me.

Thanks

If it is not leaking, works, and is giving you no trouble, leave it alone. If it has a cap and it you can get at the oil, suck it out and put fresh in, but remember these are VERY expensive units, and really need topping off only. The oil does not go bad.

Re: Tilt/Trim oil (oildyne pump, I think)

What I did was as Robby6950 said and suck out as much of the bad oil as you can from the reservoir and then fill back up with fresh. Run the outdrive up/down a few times and repeat the sucking out/refilling as necessary until the fluid returns clean. I paid $1.38 per quart for Shell 30wtND (non detergent) at Advance Auto Parts so even if it takes a few quarts it is worth it as the trim cylinders are expensive and the cheapest I have seen a motor/pump for was around $400.

Good luck.
