Re: tilt/trim oil

The oil stated in my service manual for 1994 70hp force is 10W40 motor oil.

Re: tilt/trim oil

Open the fill plug.
If it's red oil it's Trim/Tilt fluid or transmission oil.
Brown, it 30wt.
Your unit "might" have a relief screw??? Maybe not.
IF??? You find it. DON'T mess with it.
You can cause more damage than good.
If you need to bleed the system or release the pressure?
Undo the front hyd. line.

Does it just need fluid or is there a reason your working on it?
RRitt(on this site or e-bay) works on them if yours has failed?

Re: tilt/trim oil

1985 85HP should be a 3w trim motor. You can use either hydraulic oil or 30W motor oil. If you have converted to a 2w trim pump then you should use 30W motor oil. 2w trim pumps can buck if the fluid is too thin. I guess 3w motors can buck too but I have never seen one do it. I like to use hydraulic oil whenever I can because it is easier on the rubber seals. So i use HO32 on 3w trim and 30W ND on 1987-1992 2w Force trim.

Re: tilt/trim oil

thanks guys for all the good info.i am having a problem that it will bleed down, sometimes slow and sometimes fast.i found on line a manual for this motor and they say to use hydraulic oil.i have some hydraulic jack oil which I found out that there is no difference between jack oil and hydraulic oil except the name.the oil in it now is almost clear like jack oil.i hace a seal kit andf this weekend we are going to rebuild it.they don't send any seals for the shcok but they do say to make sure it is full, has anyone had any experience with this?thanks, tom

Re: tilt/trim oil

ANY color in it?
Might just be 30wt.
An 1985 85 or 125hp use's20 or 30wt.non-detergent oil, according to the factory manual.
If they put hyd. oil in it?
That could have caused the seals to go bad.
A motor that drifts down, slow or fast, needs to be rebuilt.
RRitt works on them.
You have a manual?
Get a factory manual and perform the leakdown test.
