My TT unit will not lift the engine. The unit pulls down but doesn't push up. I've been trying to figure ont the circuitry and can't seem to track the problem. I thought it wasa relay but the turned up nothing. Could the pump be low on fluid? Is there a way to lift the engine with out the TT unit. I am completely new to boats so any help is greatly appreciated by this newbie.

Cory

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

I had the same problem with my 150hp. I found out it was just a low battery and a bad swich.

There is a flat head screw on the right side of the trim mount, lossen it and then you can lift the motor by hand.

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

Cory,Post the year or model number of your engine.Does the T/T motor run in both the up and down directions? If not ,you'll want to locate the T/T relays and test for operation. Can you hear a clicking sound under the engine cover when trying to tilt engine with switch? If so the relay is likely working and the T/T motor should be energized.

There is a manual release screw on the port side or starboard side of the transom bracket(visible through an access hole ,depending on your engines year model, that you can back off and lift the engine by hand until you can flip the tilt latch to hold it up.This will afford you some access to the T/T assy.Good luck.

Hello

The Engine model numer is: 70973R.
The relay is only clicking when the switch is pressed down. I'm assuming that mean I need to by pass the switch to test it but how does one do that?

Cory

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

Your model number shows the engine to be a 1979 70 hp Evinrude.

You can run some test leads to the T/T motor wires and see if it operates in both directions.I believe green is down direction and blue is up.Energize both with pos terminal of 12 volt test lead using a suitable ground.

Did you locate the manual release screw?

ob

Found the manual release screw thanks. Where should I gound the motors to? I thought of trying to by pass all the relays but of course with no ground there was no go. Can I just run a lead to the motor housing and then try the blue Down and Green UP leads? Thanks for the help.

Cory

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

Jump 12 volt source ,pos. and neg.One lead to the green wire and one to the blue wire.Motor should run.Now swap the leads and motor should run in the opposite direction. If this test checks out ,I suspect you have a failed relay or wiring to and from the relay and switch is loose or corroded.

Blue(sky) wire is for up relay and green(ground) is for down.

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

Hey

It WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!

The unit works up and down. So, I think I figured out the problem I'm having it's in the wires that reverse the polarity black/tan and white/tan. I need to know where these are suppose to goto?

Cory

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

The motor leads are reversed through the relays. One direction energizes pos. to blue and the other pos. to green. You could swap the relays and retest.

The two wires you mention above sound like you may be refering to the T/T guage sending unit wiring.I may be wrong.

Re: Tilt trim on 70hp

I think the two wires are for reversing the polarity of the motors and one goes to pos (white/tan) and one to neg (black/tan) I am going to try this and see the results wish me luck.

Thanks for all your help again.

Cory
