The tilt/trim on my 1991 mercruiser alpha one will not operate. When i press the Tilt/trim buttons it makes a clicking sound. The clicking sound is comming from the tilt/trim pump. I cleaned the connections on the Solenoid located on the starter. I have no idea if there is another solenoid i should be cleaning or what.

My 1988 does the same thing sometimes. I am convinced it is the selenoids. I have cleaned mine too. I checked mine the grounds are good and there is power to the selenoids. If i just hit the switch a few times in a row mine starts working.

Solenoid on your starter?... Check the selonoid on your tilt pump, and make sure the resevoir is full of atf or hydraulic fluid. Does it do this for up + down or just one way?

Jim

I had the same problem on my boat which was not used for a long time. I removed the pump motor and saw that there was some build-up between the brushes and the rotor. I just sanded the build-up away and it worked great ever since. Hope this helps.

tuan

Mine had the same problem and it was the pump motor itself. It has a termistor switch protection inside the case connected to the ground wire. The connector was blown so I soldered a new one and now it is working perfectly.

Try removing the motor and checking it.

I had this problem on a 1972 Merc 165 and it was the contacts inside the trim relay. I drilled the rivets out of the case and cleaned the badly corroded contacts. Lubed them with dielectric grease and used very small stainless steel bolts to reassembly the case. That was seven years ago and still working like new.

I have a 1977 mercruiser 165 wellcraft airslot with the three button trim position and I bought it basically totalled. I can't seem to make it go down. I disconnected the trim cylinders and it moved fine sot he problem is in the cylinders. The pump makes noise like it is working fine.... sounds good and thens runs higher in tone, but the lower unit doens't move. it is possible the cylinders are frozen (no one has tried to move then in five years) or do you think the pump is bad. any help would be great. Thanks

I had the problem in my bonanza and had to replace the brushes in the trim motor, they were worn down to literally nothing.

James

Brent,........ Your problem is Frozen Cylinders.......
Take them off,+ Collapse Them,.... Then Try it Again.......They Might need to be Rebuilt.......
