Tilt/Trim Problem Not going UP

I have an '85 Sea Ray Seville 19' with a 3.0 merc I/O. Before I put the boat in the water, the tilt/trim up and down both work fine. As soon as I put it in the water and run for about 10 minutes, the Up trim/tilt button stops working on the throttle. But the down trim/tilt has never had one problem. The only way I get the trim/tilt up to work it by hooking up a remote starter switch with a push button directly to the trim/tilt module. Putting one cable to the power and one to the Up cellanoid. Then pressing the button(on the rss), the outdrive goes up. That is the only way I can get the outdrive to go up for trailering when this problem occurs. But it always starts to work again the next day (the up trim/tilt).

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem Not going UP

I suspect the stern position switch is defective (maybe getting water inside the switch). The up control is in series with the position switch, where as the down switch goes directly to the trim motor. Therefore any problems with the trim position switch would stop the motor from rising, but it will always go down.

What should I do then? Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to try and find the two wires coming from the stern limit switch and short them together (bypassing the limit switch). If the stern will now raise then you have a problem with the actual sensor on the gimble. If nothing happens, then you either have a wiring problem in the wire to raise the stern drive, or a completely different problem elsewhere..
My stern limit switch has a small plastic cover held in place by 4 screws. If you undo the four screws you can see the switch and check if it is in good condition or not. The inside of this switch should be completely dry and there is an o-ring in the cover that must be in good condition to keep the water out. On my Mercruiser the limit switch is on the port side of the gimble.

Do you also have a trailer-park switch that raises your sterndrive much higher for transporting the boat?

If it does - does this switch work when the trim switch doesn't?

If it does - it is probably your sensors that are bad on your sterndrive.

Nothing that a trip to the repair shop and $325 shouldn't fix.

Also - does your trim tab indicator function properly? One sensor sets a limit - the other is sending information to your guage. If the gauge works - but the up switch doesn't -- then probably only one sensor is bad. (I would replace them both)
