Hello new to the boating life here. Bought a boat of craigslist about 5 months ago(1990 galaxy weekender with a volvo penta aq131c motor), Got a for a good deal figured would be something that i would try and if i did not end up liking i would sell it for a loss or maybe even brake even. Well i feel in love with the boat life and plan to purchase another boat after this season (upstate new york is where i live.)_Enough about me now were i need help.

My trim/out-drive will not raise up it will go down but not up.

Example I hear it making a noise when i press up the motor is making the noise from what i am assuming. On the side of the boat near the throttle is my control dial for the trim. She will stay at 37-38 fluctuate between those 2 numbers but if i put her down she would go down to 14ish but will not come back up until i raise her manually.

At the point when i put my boat on the trailer i had to raise so that it does not hit the concrete slab while i am pulling out of the water. I had a buddy of mine press the controls to raise it up and i lifted it manually. I could see the little gear on top of my out-drive spinning and the out-drive was going up a glacier pace. So i just lifted it up at which end the numbers stayed at 37-38 got it out of the water and then tied it to the boat with a rope securing it because after i would manual lift it would drop a bit so i did not trust to stay in place while i was driving home.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for looking.

If your motor is running and the drive is not moving, most times, but not always you need to rebuild the trim cylinders,

What do you mean by you see the gear spinning?

Check your trim fluid tank and make sure it is not low on fluid, have had that issue before... makes enough to let it fall on its own but not enough to carry the weight.. if it is low you have to find the leak!
