'89 Mariner 50hp serial # OC161540

Coming out of storage it would not trim up, only down. Seemed low on oil. Topped it off and still will not trim up. I hear trim motor running but no movement.

Is there air in the system? If so, how do I bleed it off?

How can I drain the trim oil completely? What is the best method for refilling?

Haven't noticed a leak but when I opened the fill plug the trim oil was milky.

If more imfo is required, let me know.

Hope someone can help. I have my annual fishing trip coming up and the local merc/mariner repair center can't get to it before I leave.

Thanks,

Welcome to iboats.com. Trim units are not my forte , but I'll give it a shot. If it was low when you checked it, then check it again after you have tried to run it up/down a few cycles. This is how you bleed the air out too (the easy way). As long as the motor is whirrrrring in both directions, it is definitely a hydraulic problem (oil or hydrolic pump itself.
Does it sound like it is under load? If so, the pivot may need some greasing. It's stiff, and must overcome gravity and a sticky pivot too. I had a Force do this once, but it werked freed after a few up/down cycles on it's own.

After running it down and lifting it manually, I was able to put a little more trim oil in the reservior.

I doesn't sound like it is under load, but I can't be sure of that.

Will lowering the motor with the trim and raising it by hand (with the relief open) bleed the air from the system?

Called the local merc / mariner service center again and they don't have or want to take the time to help me troubleshoot on the phone. My trip is getting close and I'm starting get a little paniced.

Roger.... Mercurys are not my line of expertise but I have encountered that type problem with the OMC PTT units more than once.

It happens that somehow air would get into the system. The cure was to remove the reservoir screw, cover the hole with a thick rag, have a air compressors pressure set to a low scale of about 15 pounds, insert a air nozzle into that rag so that it is aimed into the reservoir and the rag is acting as a spill avoidance item, then apply that pressure for just a moment. In my case, that was enough to force the fluid into the oil pump area of the PTT.

Works for me.... hope it works for you.

Joe,

Don't have access to a compressor. Any thoughts on whether a tire pump or bike tire pump would work. Don't suppose it would do any harm to try.

By "the reseviour screw" I assume you mean the screw I remove to add fluid?

Is there likely to be somewhere designed into the unit to bleed off air?

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem with Fishing Trip Approaching!!!

Tried a tire pump. When I pump air into the reseviour fill hole it seems to come out two holes in the top of the hydraulic pump unit. Don't remember these holes being sealed.

I anyone can help, please do. I'm starting to panic. Fishing trip one week from today.

If you read my first post in this thread, you will get a discription of what I am seeing.

thanks,

RB

Pumped as much T/T oil out of the resevior as I could by raising and lowering the motor by hand. Refilled with the motor held up by the travel stop. Tightened the relief screw and flipped the stop. The motor lowered about a third. Still would not trim up. It will trim down in a herky jerky manner.

I have a repair manual on the way from Amazon. I may tear into it tomarrow. I'm apprehensive since I really don't know what I am doing, but I am getting desperate at this point.

RB

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem with Fishing Trip Approaching!!!

you can get a nice little compressor set up for under 100 bucks these days ( I paid 500 for a three horse sears back in 1987, same thing today is 250, sheesh)

of course, you could always just manually move the motor, I dont know, but dont the tnt motors have lock pins that decide the ultimate running angle?
just a thought

Hi Roger tilt the motor up( manually if you have to), engage the lock, remove the fill plug, fill till it overflows, replace plug, disengage the lock, run up & down several times the system is self bleeding. If the trim only works one way & not the other try swopping the relays if it now works the other way you have a faulty relay. It is easier to replace both as they are changeover relays it can be difficult to track the faulty one. Also check the contacts/terminals right thtru the system as you could have a dodgy connection.Sometimes to trim down after you have filled the system it helps to stand on the cav plate as you lower it the extra weight can help :)

Hope you have it repaired by now, but if not, isn't there a screw on the side of the T/T unit that allows you to lower the motor manually? Make sure it has not been loosened.
