Tilt/Trim problem

Hello-

I am having a devil of a time figuring this problem out.

My tilt/Trim was working perfectly until the motor went dead

I pulled the old motor off and installed a new one.

Now the motor runs fine but the unit operates like the bypass valve is open despite the screw being tightened very hard.

I have verified that the fluid level is correct but the pump just runs without lifting the outboard. The Ram does extend on the bench with no load. If I install the Hydraulic ram extended, the moment the weight of the engine is put on it, it pushes the ram right down. I can lift the motor up and down without unscrewing the release screw.

So it seems to be acting as if the bypass screw is not tight?

Any ideas?

thanks!

Is there a sequential troubleshooting post for the hydraulics?

More info:

Tried to 'bleed' air out of system.

With motor down I released the bypass valve and manually raised the engine. With engine up I tightened the bypass valve back down.

I did this a couple times to pump fluid ino the cylinder. The Outboard acually hheld a little pressure and maintained about 40% tilt after repeating this a number of times.

However, as soon as I touched the 'up-trim' button the Outboard swung down real quick like I had loosened the bypass valve.

Pump runs good. Fluid level is good.

Anyone? I am at a loss. Don't even know what to check.
