TILT/TRIM PROBLEM

1987 Bayliner capri 19' i/b 5.0 liter 305<br />the tilt trim guage is really jumpy. the guage will not move when the motor is trimmed down all the way but with the motor tilted up i can physically move the sender sensor arm to simulate full trim down and the guage will show trimm down but will then jump to tilt up and is very jumpy. any help from any one?<br /><br />thank you randy

i have a 88 capri with an omc, i would disconnect the trim sending unit in the engine compartment, it is on the right rear when standing over motor from inside boat, and connect a ohm meter to the wires on the sensor side, then move the sender by hand slowly. the ohm meter should increase or decreace slowly, if it is not a smooth sweep then i would say your sender is bad! if the ohm meter moves smooth and steady then you have a bad guage! hope this helps!
