Ok i have a 140 mercruiser engine with tilt and trim on a i think pre alpha drive, 1979 model. My problem is i think my tilt motor has gone out, and im trying to figure out how to test it, i have tried to jump across the big terminals on my solinoid, but nothing, also its kinda weird i only have 1 solinoid, it has a groun on top, the blue to the pump, on the right big nut, power left big nut, and blue wire from the control on the bottem, there is no solinoid for the down side, its just connected on what looks like a terminal jack by it self, i have the fuse also, and it seems to be ok, just not sure how to check if it is actually the solinoid thats bad or the pump? If i check voltage to the solinoid i get 12.78 to the + side, and if i check the blue wire i get a -12.78 so not sure why. any help would be muchly appreciated.

Shane

you need a service manual but here is a link to a pdf of the trim pump section give it time its 48 pages

if you use the search on the top of the page you will find your problem in great detail

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6C1R3.PDF

tommays

Re: tilt/trim problem

I have tried just hooking both the green down, or the blue up to a power supply, and the pump will not activate, im guessing from this that my pump is bad, and not my solenoid. My pump is one of the 1 piece pumps with the motor being buit into the pump, and i also do not have a down soleniod, only a connection that links the 2 green wires together, while the blue up is connected to a solenoid, my question is do i need to replace the whole unit, or can the pump motor be rebuilt, not sure if it comes off the pump or not, have not removed it from the boat yet, but it looks like it is a solid unit. Also i notice that my trim limiter and my tilt trim sending unit wires are frayed going into the lower unit and coming out from the transom to the switches, would this be possibly shorting out my connections and causing the pump to be grounded out?

just a thought as otherwise i am sure it has to be the pump.

Shane

Re: tilt/trim problem

in your try to run the motor what are you useing for a ground - there is a black wire and with out a good connection to it the motor will not run

with only one sol i dont see how the tilt worked at all it would seam that someone has removed parts of the control

it would be possable to rebuild a 1978 trim pump but unless it is a minor problem it may be past the repiar point

tommays

Re: tilt/trim problem

The pre 82 models only had one solenoid. I guess Merc decided that going down didn't require enough amperage draw to require a down solenoid. But they learned by 83 :p
To check the motor, put one motor lead to battery + the other to -
The motor is reversing for up and down so by reversing the leads on the battery will have it run the opposite direction.

Re: tilt/trim problem

Well i figured out why the pump motor did not work, took the whole pump off the boat, and decided to bench test it, when it didnt work, i decided to take the motor cover off and see if a wire was loose inside or something, well when i took the top cover off the inside was full of water, thus shorting out the motor and also rusting all the contacts inside, guess the guy who sold me the boat lied about using the pump a few weeks ago. Guess i now have a parts pump.

Don, on your suggestion do you think when i get the new pump should i put the up solenoid from this pump on the down lead so i have a 2 solenoid system now since i have a spare solenoid. since it should probably have a down as well since they fixed ther problem of drawing too much amps a few yrs later?

Thanks foir your guys help, guess im looking for a new pump now. saw a few on ebay i might have to look into.

Shane

Re: tilt/trim problem

Few months late here, but found this thread while searching for my issue....

I have the exact same issue.
I know mine was underwater last year, so suspected it to go out.

But in the guys defense..... he may have just used it....

I tested mine last week before pulling it out of the boat that sank.... put it in the new boat, finished putting motor, drive etc in. new battery and now the trim motor is shot. It worked last week or I wouldn't have wasted my time pulling it and moving it over.

I bench tested it in the boat with a pair of jumper cables (+) to blue (-) to green. Sparks thats it.
Reversed it and same thing.

So I'm off to the salvage yard to buy a another pump assembly. But like I said it worked last week so he may not have lied to you.
