I'm in Cabo San Lucas and there is not a Merc Mechanic available. My buddy's boat is in the driveway and I have no manual. The engine is a 1999 150XL OP, Ser. # 0G927312. We have had a sticking switch on the control handle. Buddy paid a dock rat to clean the boat after a hard day and the kid did not know about the sticking switch. Long story short, trashed the solinoids, burnt the female sockets, and most likely trashed the pump. I gingerly put in two new solinoids and got strong clicks from them but the pump just grinds and we get no movement. Before he realised there was a problem, Buddy took the boat for a short run. The motor went down with short jerks and when he came in it took about 5 minutes (according to him) to get it up.
OK, no manual here. My buddy is coming back down on the 17th and can bring a manual and parts with him, but I can have him DHL the parts if I need to. Of course, also the manual. Does it sound like we need a new pump as well as sockets and solinoids? And of course a new switch on the controls. If so, how do I remove the Pump, check the pump, etc?
Also, sticking temp guage and tach. Humidity could cause the problem? All connections tight.
Thanks
George

Re: Tilt/Trim Pump

i would try and hot wire the pump first , blue and greeen wires coming up from where the pump is, find the plug in the engine cowl and disconnect it, hook up a good 12 volt supply to the connectors and see if it works, positive to blue and neg to green and then reverse the hook up, if so, if no noises and it moves pump is fine, look at the wiring solenoids and terminals, having a meter and manual will definately help too

good luck and keep us infoed

Thanks, I'm heading out to the driveway to check it out, just finished changing grounding wires between the mounting bracket and the lower unit, where they go across the shock mounts, lots of little things to do, beside the major do-dah's.

Got the wires sorted out, unplugged the two from the sockets to the solinoid seats and went battery dirct like you suggested. Get a chaka-chaka sound from the pump. Motor sounds to be working, but mabe slow? I am not sure. Maybe it was stuck on so long we blew a seal and are out of fluid? If so, where and how do I check? And what do I replace it with?
Thanks!
