I recently acquired a 1988 40HP Johnson. I am in the process of rebuilding it. The tilt trim is the bolt on style. There does not appear to be any requirement for relays as the 4 pin connector from the remote matches the 4 pin from the trim motor. Three pins are used, blue, green and ground. This seems strange to me as I dont think that the switch in the handle of the remote can manage the current drawn by the motor. I have not tried using the remote switch out of caution.
I will install the later model relay pack if necessary.
Thoughts please,

Is it a 2 wire or 3 wire motor ??---Many of those older 3 wire motors use a solenoid for the up function ( high amperage )---The 2 wire motors used relays that are usually mounted inside the boat on the transom.--And believe it or not some of the switches can handle the lower amperage for the down function !----Look up the parts diagram to see what you are missing and what you need.----May not need the solenoid on that trim / tilt set-up.

Hi Racerone.
Thanks for the response. Again you have been most helpful.
I dont even know what the name of that type of T/T is. Do you happen to have a link?

Hi Racerone.
It is the hydraulic twin cylinder unit. Finally my memory kicked in and I found the OEM manual for that period motor series. The electrical schematic is not up to much just a block schematic and shows a toggle switch connected via a square plug/socket directly to the pump motor with no relays. There is no indication that the remote control T/T switch is the correct switch and man enough.
Any further info would be most appreciated.
Thanks again.
jim.
