1974 70hp Johnson that has the tilt assist cylinder. Will a power unit off a another OMC product fit in place? The reason I'm asking is because we have quite a few power tilt & trim units on blown motors at work. I know I have access to two 88hp motors and a few V-6 models. Just wondering if either will fit. Thanks for any advice

Re: Tilt & Trim Question

You might want to go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the motors you have access to and compare them with yours.

Re: Tilt & Trim Question

The stern brackets from '73 and up are all the same.

Re: Tilt & Trim Question

The factory tilt/trim system for the 73-77 is pretty unique. It's the type that fits outside the transom brackets. Not the same version as the 88 or V6 trim systems. (The main difference is the swivel bracket-as was mentioned in post 3.) That ancient system does work well, it's just not as neat as the current types: where all of the trim system nests inside the two transom brackets behind the swivel bracket. These old systems have been discontinued for many, many years. The repair parts for them are getting scarce. You could consider purchasing a junk 73-77 engine (that has the trim system complete) and swap it over. Don't forget the electrical part of the trim system: The control solenoid and the dash trim switch. Many times those electrical components are not sold with the junk engine itself.
