Hello - recently switched 85 hp Merc engines on my boat. Had to disconnect the hoses tilt/trim unit and lost a lot of the fluid. Now I need to replace the lost fluid. What kind of fluid goes back in? How do I know when it is full? Which hole does the fluid go in? and do I need bleed the unit, if do what is the procedure? Thanks

Re: tilt/trim service

Get a service manual for your motor, and yes I'm sure there's a procedure for getting air out. With most TnT units, it involves filling to normal level initially and cycling the unit fully a few times, then adding fluid as required. Merc dealer will have the fluid.

Senorfrog,
Pony on Wildeone, you really need a manual on your motor, it will answer 90% of all your questions and will also allow you to ask questions which will be understood. There are about 7 different trim systems on mercury 85 hp motors. If you can describe what you have we will try and answer the best that we can.

Most t/t use 30 weight/ 10w-30w oil, some use regular hydraulic fluid. Without seeing your motor and what type of system you have, we could be telling you how ours works and where to fill or drain but it might be wrong on your motor due to changes in systems and who might have changed something on your system we are not knowledgeable about.
