Only thing I'm finding is a manual release on starboard side

I came here tonight looking what may be wrong with my trim/tilt on my 1996 120 force. The manual overide on mine is on the starboard side of the transom(the second hole) . There is a plastic screw with a metal retaining pin fastened to it. My manual says to turn it 3 times counter clockwise and position motor and tighten plastic screw down. my plastic screw head is broken and the boat is stuck down at the ramp until I can figure out what is wrong with my trim.

Might have to pull the top bolt that goes thru the tilt piston shaft and the shock absorber cylinder if you have the wrenches. Only other thing to try is remove the line that goes from the top of the tilt cylinder (the long cylinder that goes up and down on the right side) to the pump and see if it releases any pressure to allow you to lift the motor manually.

The 96 /120 is nothing like the 125
Loosen the front hyd. line, watch out for high pressure oil spray.
That will allow you to tilt it up.
No manual release either.

loosened and drained oil, still was stuck, only option was to take it off boat and set in boat to get home, the 125 has no manual release and that is an unbelievable flaw on that force Warning to anyone who owns a 125 force, get rid off it or keep and extra pump on hand at all times

Usually if the hyd. line is loosened it should be able to lift.
You try the other lines?

The 87 had relays/solenoids to operate the pump.
If it stopped working then test the relays or connections.
Did it stop running both ways?

Next time.
This can help, while in the water, take the lower unit off.
Then you can pull it home.

Disconnect both hyd lines on the tilt cylinder, top and bottom, and that should allow you to move it freely.
