I need to replace my tilt and trim senders on my 1992 alpha one outdrive. I know that I will need to pull the outdrive to properly replace the two switches but is there another way. What is the reason why I cannot just cut the existing wires and then splice and seal with silicon to prevent water from contactin the wires.

Thanks in advance,

Re: tilt trim switch replacement

Hello, You could repair it that way, but it won't last for very long! The wires get very brittle over time. The insulation cracks and copper becomes exposed. Then the copper rots and falls apart! :( I suspect you wouldn't even get them to splice. The wire would probably fall apart in your hands! (I know mine did!) The only way to address this problem is to fix it right! You need to buy the kit (you can't buy the trim sender separate of the limit switch or vice versa) Pull the drive, pull the bellhousing and replace the units. Some people say you can replace them with the drive in place, I say it is actually easier to just take it apart and do it right. Inspect and replace the bellows while you are in there as you will have everything that attaches them mostly apart. Good luck, keep posting! ;)
