i'm working on a old 15' bass boat , it has a panther model 55 tilt trim unit but no switch and the relays are no good.
i was wondering if i got a polarity reversing switch and used heavy wire (12 gauge ?) why i would need relays
thanks for any help

Welcome to Iboats! I'm not familiar with your particular trim circuit, but your principle is sound. You mention heavy wire but you'll need to consider the switch contacts. As you've noted, the wire size to your switch will need to be increased so that you have less voltage drop for the high current to a remote location, but you'll also want to carefully consider your switch ratings. A switch with a good amperage rating usually has a strong snap action like your solenoids have. The best switch to control your trim though would be a momentary switch that springs back to off, rather than staying "snapped" in position. So, select your switch carefully and make sure the circuit is fuse protected.

I'm the same as Grandad, I don't know your particular system but Mercury uses standard single pole double throw relays, Bosh style. They're a dime a dozen and would let you use a lot cheaper wiring and switches.
