I had a jammed steering system on my 22' Galaxy Star shooter with 3.7 Mercruiser I/O after the boat was sitting for a few years. I disconnected the cable end from the tilt tube and the cable and wheel work great. I cannot get the end of the steering cable rod out of the tilt tube. I know it may be frozen.I want to remove the Tilt Tube assamble from the power steering ram. I removed a nut which screwed onto a bolt, but the Tilt tube is still attatched. It seams o be connected to a grease fitting and a rubber housing. Should the tilt tube just pull off of there? Does it need a gear puller?
Thanks
ROB

Re: Tilt Tube Removal advice?

If you are talking about the end of the steering cable being stuck in the steering tube, then that's the exact problem I had recently. I ended up heating the tube with a torch, (I used my acetylene "gently" ;) but I think a propane torch would work as well). After heating the tube, the end of the cable came out easily. I was able to clean the tube and reuse it without any problems.
