I think im using the correct technology? Anyhow, let me just use pictures to explain.
Heres my dilemma. Ive got a 1972 Sidewinder 18'SS, on it there is a 1971 85hp Evinrude with the selectric shift. The steering wasnt put together correctly when i got it, so im going to fix it. I was going to just make another bracket like the one i have and mount it for the tube.. But there must be an OEM part that i can get used to give me a mount for the steering tube...
Here is the way the steering was setup, before i tore the boat to its hull and started the resto. Im about to put the splashwell back on, and finish up the glass work... NOTICE THERE IS ONLY ONE HOMEMADE MOUNT for the steering tube...

My question is, how can i get a factory steering tube mount that looks like this??? You see where the tube would go through the transom bracket? Is there one thats interchangable? And how hard would it be to swap it out?

My plans before were to flip the current bracket over (moves the steering to the center correctly) and get another similar bracket to put on the other side to give it a more solid mount???

What you have, is a poorly done attempt to make one of these ....

What is on your boat now is not safe & you need to get rid of it. I bought mine through an Evinrude dealer, who got it from a wholesaler called Donovan Marine. A decent fab shop could also make one very easily. Its pretty much the same thing as what you want to do, but it has a threaded center tube, for installation of backing nuts. It also has a zerk type grease fitting, for periodic lubrication.

Correct. I was told by someone else that i could get a threaded tube from the local boat store, and would be able to slide my cable directly into it. And all i would have to do is get another bracket to basically match up with what you have shown.
What i was wondering is, was there a way to purchase just the transom mounted portion of the outboard that can just go on my motor?

I was kinda searching around on the net to see what i could find.....
About how much did that run you? And what was included when you bought it?

Most marine dealers sell parts from the Land and Sea marine catalog. Their latest catalog shows a splashwell mount version of this steering tube assembly for use on these older engines. There are two or three parts you would need to get including the leg bracket, the tube assy and a link arm, unless you reuse yours. Aside from some external rust, what is wrong with your current one?

You might be able to put a transom/swivel bracket from a '73 or later motor on your motor, but the cost and effort would be greater than just buying and installing an adpater like mine.

BTW, there is a distinct advantge to having one of these adapters, instead of an engine mounted tilt tube. Mine actually saved my motor once. I hit something underwater and the force was great enough to shear my swivel bracket. Because the system that I purchased is strongly bolted to the transom and has a strong, stainless connector to the engine, my motor neither tried to climb into the boat (something that they typicall do in such a situation), or fell off of the back of it. A motor that has a steering cable connected directly too it, would have fallen into the water when my boat stopped, to the degee of slack iin it.

T & R makes great products. The one in the Land & Sea catalog is a Teleflex product.

Well, until i flipped the bracket over~ it wasnt centered properly. Fixed that, but if there was any resistance on the motor, its unsafely mounted as the tilt tube (if you want to call it that) would rotate up or down. It wasnt bolted tightly, and id at least like to put another bracket on the other side and another jam nut on it, just trying to keep it simple and not looked hacked together... All on a budget.
