I have a Yamaha C-90 but the real question is whether the rod should be stored all the way inside the tilt tube when the boat is not in use (with the wheel hard over) or doesn't it really make a difference ? I lubed it, but maybe not enough. I ask because I have had to either replace the steering cable or had the steering freed up professionally abt most about every four years. Not interested in hydraulic system at this point, so please don't suggest, lol.

Re: Tilt Tubes

Since your from Long Island I would say your biggest issue is salt. Placement of the steering rod in or out will make little difference. The more often you add lube and protection the longer it will last. Just washing the rod out well help, but once washed out you need to relube

Re: Tilt Tubes

If you store with rod all the way in you cannot hit it to break it loose when it rusts and locks up.

There are nuts with o rings you can replace the original on with that helps seal water out and keeps the lub in.
even has grease sert to pump grease into it.

I had one on my old Johnson, but do not know if it would fit on the Yamaha

Re: Tilt Tubes

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, I have that nut with the fitting on it to insert a lightweight oil. But 99yam40, you are right about not be able to wack it
free if I leave the rod all the way in, as I have gotten an extra season out of it by heating with a hair dryer and wacking the h. out of it.
Unable to wash the tilt tube out as the engine has to be removed when the steering cable needs replacement. (small boat, tight transom space)

Re: Tilt Tubes
