Can someone please explain to me what the difference between tilt and tilt/trim is? As far as I know I've never had a boat with tilt/trim, but have always used the tilt function at speed to tweak the ride out.

Now I've seen outboards that have hydraulics that "tilt" quickly to a point and then slow down for more finite adjustments once in the lower position. Is this what tilt/trim refers to?

Re: Tilt vs tilt/trim

If its a sterndrive or outboard you can have tilt and trim Trim is the bow up or bow down controls found on most common control handles, the Trailer button would be your tilt to raise the drive or outboard past the Trim limit with most sterndrives this is done with the same two rams, and uses trim limit switch to set trim limits over tilt, Some o/b use seperate rams for trim over tilt positions such as Jonnies and Rudes, but my old Chrysler O/B only had tilt for trailering but that was a 1976 model.

My boat has the tilt/trim on it. There is a single ram that moves slow about 6 inches and then stops when it stops there are 2 rams (one on either side) that lifts the motor fast for trailering.

Re: Tilt vs tilt/trim

I have “tilt” only on my Volvo 270. It picks the outdrive up (for loading on the trailer) and will drop the leg (after launching) and that is it. If you try to use it a speed you will burn up the tilt motor or the worm gear.
I always thought “trim” was the ability to change the attitude of the boat via moving the outdrive and "tilt" was moving the outdrive up and down for trailering.
