I am having problems with the tilt in my 1976 electric shift OMC with a 250 ci GM engine.
I have repaired it to the point that the the tilt motor turns the tilt worm wheel in the clutch housing but the clutch won't engage. I have shimmed the clutch assembly a little tighter but all it does is spin the plates and won't lift the leg. I can lift the leg by hand with no resistance - is this normal?
The tilt motor has been rebuilt at a electrical shop and turns strong. The hammer blow spring is not broken.
My manual talks about adjusting the torque with an allen wrench at the end of the clutch shaft but I can't find anything remotely close to that.
Can the clutch plates be rebuilt so that they are tighter/grip more? Am I missing something? I am a total newbie and more of a woodworker than a mechanic so any ideas would be more than welcome.
Thanks,
Darren
