I'm new to this but have done some research so will try to give enough information.

I just purchased an older pontoon with a 25hp Mariner. The original owner added a mechanism to allow the motor to be tilted. I believe it is a hydraulic lift.

Info on the lift control:
Dole Fluid Power Product
Arrow Machine Manufacturing
Model S-P500

I have searched & can find no info on either company name.

To lower the motor, you loosen a screw-type cap. To lift the motor, you tighten the screw-type cap & pump a handle. It worked very nicely at first. It still lowers fine, but when I try to lift the motor, it only lifts part way & then I no longer feel resistance when I pump the handle.

Although the fluid appeared to be pretty full, I was told to add some car brake fluid. This had not no affect--still only tilts up part way.

I didn't post in the boat motor forum as this is not an electronic system. Hope I'm doing this correctly.

I really would like to get a manual, but can't find a source. Hope someone might be able to help.

Re: Tilt

Can you drain the existing fluid and replace it with standard Tilt & Trim fluid? Might Work! You may have air in the lines and will need to go up and down with it as many as 10 times to purge the air! Good Luck and you may want to post this in the Engine forum, as it is Engine related!

Re: Tilt

I have seen lift devices cobbled up like this by folks who were handy. It's probably not a factory design job. They did work, however. I agree that you probably have some air in the syatem and need to bleed it, adding fluid as needed.

TerryR,

Yes, Dole did make a manual hydraulic engine lift. I installed one about 15 years ago and it worked great until the boat was sold six years later.

I am not sure about the fluid. It came with the kit. You should be able to tell by looking at it.

If it's red-it's automotive auto. trans. fluid. Probably Dexron II.

If it's thin and brown, it's brake fluid.

If it's brown and very oily, it's hydraulic tilt fluid. You can find this at just about any marine store.

I think you are low on fluid.

Thank you all for the help. I'll check on draining & replacing the fluid & getting out the air.

Terry

Did you ever figure it out? I have the same setup as you and I'd like any info you have.

Re: Tilt

I am not familiar with that system however i have had floor jacks that would only go up part way and this was caused by air-lock. I can't remember the procedure to cure this, but you can go to wally world and look at a floor jack users manual, the procedure is in there. My floor jack came from there and is named MVP. hth
