I think I already know the answer, but wanted to explain what is happening. I kinda hijacked a post the other day and got some information from stonyloam. I noticed that my volt meter would sometimes move from it's normal point of 14 v and go to 18v for a brief time and then back to 14v. The charging system is OEM and is a 3.7 litre mercruiser s#A475184. If I do replace the charging system with a conversion kit, what happens to the OEM voltage regulator? Is it bypassed? Do I need to replace it?

We recently purchased this boat and I stumbled across this website/ forum. I can't tell you how much I enjoy reading the questions and answers. My wife asks me,"what are you doing now?" I say,"I'm learning!"

just leave the regulator. certainly don't need to replace it AND get a conversion kit!

+1 Mike. Just remove all the wires from the regulator. Fold back and tape off the wires from the stator. Leave the old regulator in place, it helps hold the incoming water hose in place.
