Time for new truck tires...which ones?

Ok, I know I may get slammed for part of this, but I have an '05 F150 XLT 2WD truck, with tow package. The last couple times out I've had some slippage problems on the ramp, which I've never had before. Part of it is our ramps suck, they are asphalt so they get slick. My stock tires have 35k miles on them and are showing a lot of wear. My tire guy recommended Toyo Open Country A/T for good wet traction; what do you all think? (other than "get a 4WD")...

I'm currently running Goodyear Silent Armors and like them. Aggressive tire for a 4X2. I have had real good luck with the cooper tires too. Great tire for the money. I couldn't get the size I needed in the model of tire I wanted so I went with the Goodyears this time. The cooper discover series is what I would do. The ATR model or the HT's. The HT's have a lot of traction for a highway tire. I got 60k out of my last set.

I'm running Yokohama Geolander AT/S on my Durango it is selectable 4wd but I don't really need it on the ramps even with loose gravel, I like these tires better than the BFGoodrich radial long trail that preceded them. It also helps that they are 31x10.5x15. They were great in snow also.

BFG A/T great tires, last long and real good grip. I had them for years and I am going to replace the generals on my 04 silverado with them when its time.

Have you all found that a new set of tires made a huge difference? I have to think the stock tires are not very good and that is my problem. I know a 4WD would be best, but it's not in the cards right now.

Michelin LTX....only tire i have used for the last 25 years.
Great traction, best ride and last forever.;)
I have over 60k on the set on my truck now and they still have at least half the tread life to go. I do a lot of towing with it too...

I just purchesed some tires for my dad's 1/2T Chevrolet Silverado. I bought a set of Trail A/P tires. Found out they are made in the USA and are made by Michelin for this company. Couldn't tell them apart from the Michelin LTX tires that were on there.

I run retreaded tires from, www.treadwright.com on all of my pickups. I haven't had a complaint yet, they last alot longer than any other tires I've used. I've got 24 tires from them in service right now, on everything from my bronco to the F450. One set of four has over 50,000 miles of gravel road behind them, with 1/4" of tread left to go. Just thought I'd share my experiences with these retreaded tires with you, it is a good way to save some $, and use less raw materials.

But are they made to Michelin standards? I doubt it, Michelin would never (or any other company) make a tire with the same features and sell it to some other company for less money. Guess what would happen?
It may look the same but I highly doubt it will last as long or ride like the real deal...........

I have previously purchased tires made by Michelin for another brand and have had incredible results...this is over multiple sets of tires that I have purchased for various trucks. Tread pattern is identical the LTX tires I took off.

Well, a bit of an update. On a whim I went to the local Ford dealer, told I really would like to trade my 2WD for a 4WD and they made it happen for a great price. Now have an '06 F150 XLT Lariat Super Crew with 4WD.

Geez. Those must be expensive tires.

:) Congrats on the new vehicle.

Thanks Tacklewasher; actually, my vehicle update was a fantastic deal, in my eyes. I got to upgrade year, model, warranty and others for only $50 more/month than what I was already paying!

Yep, buying a 4X4 is a shure way to take care of traction problems. I run Kellys, Safari SJR's on the 3/4 ton 2WD and MSR's on 1/2 ton 4X4. Highly recomended.

Ditto on the Michelin LTX's. IMHO The ONLY tire to put under a light truck!

Re: Time for new truck tires...which ones?

A lot of how a tire works on a particular vehicle has to do with the vehicle itself.
I swore after having a set of Bridgestone Dueller tires on an older truck a few years ago that I'd never own another pair, but my Ranger came with a set of them on it when I bought it used and they've been fine now for 3 years. Good traction in all situations and they seem to be aging just fine. If and when they get replaced however, my first choice will be Michelin, but cost will have a lot to do with that choice as well.

The only complaint I really have about this set of Bridgestones is that they ride hard but they're a bit heavier than the truck needs, but it's great for towing.
I'm not sure I'll replace these with another set of 6 ply tires or not. They ride far to harsh when not loaded.

My other Ranger, with a set of standard passenger car tires rides about 10 times better and don't seem to mind towing either. But it's not much on dirt or wet grass when towing. The Cooper Lifeliner tires on that truck aren't much for wet traction off the pavement.

I plan to upgrade the wheels on both trucks soon, I already found two sets of OEM aluminum rims, so a fresh set of tires is in order for both. I don't think I'll be shopping for an LT rated tire for either one since I really don't haul any big loads and most of the weight remains on the trailer not so much the truck. If I were towing in the hills or a lot of off road, I'd be more concerned about having a heavier tire.
