1983 Evinrude 200 horse. Two questions, Is there any way to lube or grease a timer base without removing the flywheel? I keep hearing of sticky timer bases and wonder if mine might be starting down that path. Are they supposed to move right when you apply the throttle or are they behind just a bit? Second can you replace just the bendix gear the tops of mine are quite worn and would hate to replace a starter that works fine if I can get away with just replacing the gear. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

i have sprayed wd-40 under my flywheel. yes you can just replace the complete bendix. the timing should move before the carb.

Re: Timer base & bendix gear

It seems like the timing advance is slightly behind the throttle which might explain the hesitation I get when trying to get a skier up. If I ease it up it seems much better but if I just drop the hammer it acts as if it floods out, it will always start right back up. The hesitation started to get more present towards the end of last season. I have a seloc and oem manual I will go over them in more detail. Do you think that would be in the link and sync section or somewhere else more specific. I try to do everything myself as there is NO ONE close to me that will even touch an older outboard. I have found one guy but he only works on mercs.

there should be a good link n sinc in the OEM manual. i think that is atleast part of your problem. with the carb advancing first it is sort of flooding before the spark catches up.

T.D. thank you very much for the quick response I will study that section in my oem manual and give it a go. Do you think I could order the bendix assembly here on I boats? If so that is the route I will go. Thanks again
