I finally got my engine together after a long rebuild project, and now I want to start it. I have 2 manuals, but both call out a tool for timing at TDC that I dont own. Any recommendations on timing the engine. Also, how should I mix the fuel to break it in? I honed the cylinders, put on new rings. Any suggestions would be welcomed. It's finally getting warm enought here where I want to go out boating.

Joe Reeves has a post on timing your motor with the boat on the trailer & engine off. Use the search to find it.

Your motor calls for 50:1 gas to oil. For the first 10 hours double the oil to 25:1. I would run the motor at 1500 rpm or less for the first hour. Hour 2-5 get it up on plane but keep the rpm down varying it frequently. Hour 6-10 do the same but raise the peak rpm gradually with occasional bursts to WOT. Key thing is to keep varying the rpm.

Check the torque on the head bolts at 10 hrs & go to the 50:1 mix.

The tool you mention is for setting the timing pointer which is critical. Once thats set you can proceed with setting the actual timing.

The most important, and most overlooked, thing about any rebuild is to correct the cause of the original failure. A broken ring or a damaged piston is not a cause. Thats an effect.
